HYDRATION ON THE ROAD: WHY WATER MATTERS

Stay Hydrated. Stay Alert. Take Care of Yourself.

When you’re driving over the road, it’s easy to get caught up in miles, schedules, traffic, and deliveries. Sometimes something as simple as drinking enough water gets pushed to the side.

But hydration is an important part of taking care of yourself while you’re behind the wheel.

Your body needs water to function properly, and staying hydrated throughout the day can help you feel your best while you’re on the road.

💧 WHY DOES HYDRATION MATTER?

Water plays an important role in many functions throughout your body.

When you don’t drink enough, you may experience things like:

  • Thirst

  • Dry mouth

  • Headaches

  • Fatigue

  • Dizziness

  • Darker-colored urine

  • Difficulty concentrating

For drivers, feeling tired, sluggish, or unfocused can make an already demanding day even more challenging.

Don’t wait until you’re extremely thirsty to start drinking water.

Make hydration part of your daily routine.

MAKE WATER PART OF YOUR DRIVING ROUTINE

The easiest way to drink more water?

Keep it within reach.

Keep a reusable water bottle in your truck and refill it throughout the day.

Try making drinking water part of the routine you already have.

EVERY TIME YOU:

🚛 Start your truck

⛽ Stop for fuel

🍽️ Take a meal break

🛑 Stop for a rest break

📦 Finish a delivery

Take a few drinks of water.

Creating small habits makes staying hydrated much easier.

🧊 KEEP YOUR WATER COLD

Let’s be honest—cold water is usually a lot easier to drink.

If your truck has a refrigerator, keep a few bottles or a reusable bottle chilled and ready to go.

You can also add:

  • Lemon

  • Lime

  • Cucumber

  • Fresh berries

  • Mint

for a little extra flavor without relying on sugary drinks.

☕ WHAT ABOUT COFFEE AND ENERGY DRINKS?

Coffee is a popular part of many drivers’ routines, especially during early mornings or long shifts.

You don’t necessarily have to give it up.

However, don’t let coffee or energy drinks replace your water intake.

Make water your primary beverage and be mindful of drinks that contain a lot of added sugar or caffeine.

If you’re relying heavily on caffeine because you’re feeling unusually tired, remember that caffeine isn’t a substitute for adequate sleep.

💰 HYDRATION CAN SAVE MONEY TOO

Staying hydrated doesn’t have to be expensive.

Instead of purchasing bottled drinks every time you stop at a truck stop, consider carrying a reusable water bottle.

Fill it before you leave and refill it when you have access to clean drinking water.

A few dollars here and there may not seem like much—but those small purchases can add up over hundreds of miles and multiple trips.

Pack it. Fill it. Reuse it. Save money.

💦 DON’T FORGET ABOUT ELECTROLYTES

Water isn’t the only consideration when it comes to hydration.

Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium and potassium that help support important functions in the body.

For most people, regular meals and water are enough to maintain normal hydration.

However, during situations involving heavy sweating, heat, prolonged physical activity, or significant fluid loss, electrolyte-containing drinks may sometimes be useful.

If you choose one, check the nutrition label and be mindful of added sugar.

🚨 KNOW THE SIGNS

Your body gives you signals when it needs more fluids.

Some common signs of dehydration can include:

⚠️ Increased thirst

⚠️ Dry mouth

⚠️ Headache

⚠️ Fatigue

⚠️ Dizziness

⚠️ Dark yellow urine

⚠️ Urinating less frequently

If you’re experiencing significant dizziness, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or other concerning symptoms, don’t ignore it. Stop somewhere safe and seek appropriate medical attention.
